Residents of Pennsylvania that have certain medical conditions have been able to legally purchase medical marijuana for a terminal illness; cancer; HIV/AIDS; amyotrophic lateral sclerosis; Parkinson’s disease; multiple sclerosis; epilepsy; inflammatory bowel disease; neuropathies; Huntington’s disease; Crohn’s disease; post-traumatic stress disorder; intractable seizures; glaucoma; autism; sickle cell anemia; severe, chronic, or intractable pain; dyskinetic and spastic movement disorder; or addiction and substitute therapy- opioid reduction since April 2018. In 2021, three new conditions (cancer remission therapy, damage to nervous tissue of the brain, and neuropathies associated with nervous tissue damage) were added to the list of qualifying medical conditions. The Pennsylvania Department of Health, which oversees the medical marijuana program, has the authority to add medical conditions to the list, so if yours is not listed, check back regularly.
Interested patients will have to register with the state and receive a patient ID number that is checked with your PA driver’s license, undergo a telemedicine appointment with one of our doctors that has been authorized through the Pennsylvania Department of Health. 420ID submits the results of your consultation with your patient ID number on your behalf as part of our service. Patient identification cards cost $50 annually. Applicants may be able to get a discounted card through the Medical Marijuana Assistance Program (MMAP) if they participate in Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, and WIC programs.
License holders can purchase a 90-day supply packaged as 192 medical marijuana units. The 90-day supply is divided into two 45-day fill periods. Each medical marijuana unit is the equivalent of 3.5 grams of dry leaf, one gram of concentrate, or 100 milligrams of THC infused into a pill, capsule, oil, liquid, or topical cream, lotion, or gel from as many as 173 dispensaries across the state. The patient or caregiver can only return for a new 90-day supply when all but a 7-day supply has been exhausted. Medical cannabis can only be vaped and not smoked and cannot be sold in the form of edibles.

Patients under the age of 18 must have at least one caregiver (and up to two) registered to pick up their cannabis-based medication. The caregiver must be 21 or older and cannot have a criminal record or conviction relating to the sale or possession of drugs, narcotics, or controlled substances in the last five years. An approved caregiver must live in Pennsylvania and have a valid driver’s license or identification card and can help up to five state-registered patients. Caregivers must have a background check including fingerprints before being approved. The approval process for caregivers takes lover six weeks from start to finish.
A caregiver can also administer medical marijuana at their child’s school providing the Patient Authorization Letter is on file and the caregiver notifies the school administrator prior to each instance he or she will be coming to give the medication. The school is required to provide a safe and secure location for the caregiver to administer the medication. Caregivers of minors are also allowed to legally purchase medical marijuana from another state, territory of the United States or any other country. Caregivers should be mindful if purchasing out of state that marijuana is still against the law at a federal level, and surrounding states do not have reciprocity with Pennsylvania, meaning you are not protected if you are stopped by law enforcement.
Employers cannot discriminate against workers or discipline or fire them based on their status as medical marijuana patients. They can, however, discipline employees for using or being under the influence of medical marijuana at work, as well as bar workers from performing dangerous jobs while under the influence.
